Chipmunk.

Saw this little guy this morning.
Don't believe I have ever seen a chipmunk road kill.
Those little critters are fast.
This one was a super recent death and I was glad I got a pic early.
By the end of the day he was just a spot on the road.
Poor little guy.
RIP

Vultures Gathering

On the way to work after the rain the vultures were sunning and drying in the early morning today.
It makes me teary eyed it is such a beautiful gathering!!

Early Morning Sun Bath at the Vulture Tree

Perfect. No Missing Feathers.

Spent 20 Minutes Grooming.

The awesome part of this shoot was that as I was driving away, I look back and at least 3 dozen more vultures arrive and start circling above the Vulture Tree for a total of about 50 birds.
They were fast circling and not coasting so it was impossible for me to get a good picture.
Loved it.

Apologies for some blurriness.
I wish I had a better camera because these birds deserve pristine photos.
But it's all I've got to work with right now.

By 10:00 am they are all gone from the tree and the sky except one that soared right above my car.
(Probably left earlier but that is when I went by the tree again)

Skunk Season?

Here in my part of the country animals seem to die in groups.
Two years ago we had a major squirrel road kill epidemic. One day in a 5 mile stretch we counted 25 squirrels as road kill.
I have been living here 12 years and had never seen it before or since.
Now the skunks are getting hit crossing the roads.
Saw 3 on Tuesday.
None on Monday.
Too much traffic to take pics of the other 2 but got this one to share.
I wanted to flip him over but was too worried I might get the skunk smell on my shoes and even though it wasn't noticeable while taking the pic, there was no way I was taking any chances.
Sorry.

Just a nut and a nap.

If it weren't for the bloody skid mark in the background, this squirrel seems to just be resting with his eyes open.
Saved one nut too many this year I guess.
Poor roadkill.

Heads Up !

This roadkill was down a country road and apparently just got his head run over.

Backroad Head Bash

So little damage made me want to bring him home for display, but he was found on the way to a party and thought I would pass it up this time.

Kind of Fishy

This road kill was in the road and it had crispy fins, but I find it very difficult to believe that is was hit by a passing car.
I was walking around downtown one evening, with some friends, crossing the street, and almost stepped on it.
It was totally weird.
The theories we came up with were it fell out of a fishermens truck or a bird of prey dropped it en route to its nesting area.

If you have another possibility, please let me know.

Vulture Tree

Pass this tree every day.
Sometimes its full of vultures,
Sometimes not.
We had a good rain the night before so they were all drying their wings in the sun.

Vulture Tree

Vulture Tree Zoom

The bird on the far left watched me the entire time.
The closer I got the more he folded in his wings.
So I stopped for fear he would leave, and just admired his bright red head and black feathers.

Made my day.
Most underrated bird I know.
Love these guys!
